I created this map for the Beginning Unreal Engine course at San Diego Mesa college.
I used the Landmass tool to create a spline shape for the initial island mesa, and then added noise to create the grooves and spires. This created a very Myst/Riven aesthetic that I was quite pleased with. Ultimately I wanted to create an island layout similar to Halo’s Silent Cartographer level with an ascension from a beach to an inner island area, which was easy to punch in like a crater by adding a new Landmass layer. I then added painted textures, foliage and props, using assets from the UE Marketplace, most notably the Tropical Jungle Pack.
This project gave me starting competency at making outdoor environments in Unreal Engine 4.
